Check that the items are genuine and comply with safety regulations or they will be imponded by customs. Buying from China is high risk.

I am in the process of buying goods from china to sell in the uk. I have found a supplier on alibaba which i like and they have quoted for the goods i want + a charge for DHL delivery to my address.
My question is what possible or definite charges will occur at customs? There will be a small number of boxes totaling to approx 13kgs. Do all orders get checked or just some? is the charge just VAT 20%?
I want to know in advance so i can be sure its worth placing the order! Is there anything else i need to be able to order?
