This sounds like so called vanity publishing where the writer is so keen to see his name in print they pay to have the book published. Needless to say, except from a few to friends and relatives, none are sold and no profit is made.
Upfront Fee = SCAM!!! That is a pat answer. Its not a scam if you do you homework. Some people want a publisher that will edit and get the manuscript in an e format or paperback. If you want to do your own marketing and are willing to forgo the frills, then by all means look around for "self-publishers." Some will charge for their services or packages ala carte. Be diligent, ask questions so your expectations are met. If not move on. I have looked at a number of publishing houses. I'm hoping insomnia-press will be the one for me. They will pay me but will only do an e-version. If that happens I'll go look for a Print on demand or another publisher to do a paperback version for me to hand out or sell.
Don't let these answers scare you, but do your homework.
there are no legitimate complaints on these guys, just because they charge a fee for a service doesn't make them a scam... I would like to see anyone here get a book published for under 150.00 and pay for all the legal mumbo jumbo... research and legal fees arent cheap, looks like these guys just help get past that stuff and push you forward with more knowledge, I do agree diligence is the fair word,, doing your own research on a company is key, no matter how much money your spending... Just my opinion... Have a great day...

have you hears anything?
Upfront Fee = SCAM!!!
The sites registration info is hidden behind a proxy so you can't tell who owns it.
Well, they aren't a publisher, neither are they a literary agent. They are a headhunter for literary agents. What they are selling you is the ability for them to get you in front of literary agents that they have connections with. You are paying to forgo the query process.
Upfront Pay = Scam? Maybe fore literary agents, but not for head-hunters. Either pay these guys, or do your own querying. No big deal.
tell me about this company American writing association are they for real or not
Hey so I've been back and forth talking with a man, Jerry Moore, who works for the supposed American Writing Association. Does anybody know literally ANYTHING about this company?
Their website http://writingassociation.org/index.html seems kind of fishy among other things, but previous to looking at the website and trying to find ANY info on the company I was entirely convinced; I could tell he had actually read the book I had submitted, and he has been persistent to the point that it'd be kind of silly if he was simply trying to scam $149 out of me.
Any and all help is gladly appreciated--also please excuse my inexperience, I've never tried to publish a book before.
