How to start up a recovery business?

Really you're supposed to have business rate insurance but most removal men don't use that, posh people only check your insurance and they won't use you, they use the big companies. Just get ordinary insurance for personal use, this is what nearly every man and a van does. I will probably get thumbs down from some of the twits on here but you can't go running up big bills when you are starting off. You don't need a special licence at all, but if you're going to do rubbish removal which is a good idea, you can use council tips (which are free) they only let you use them so many times a year and then you have to pay a private tip. Also, don't ever do any work for builders, they just try to rip you off. People will ask you to move motorbikes a lot, and bits of household items. Funding? There is very little, depending on how old you are the Prince's trust might help.

Edit: Oh, and be sure to put an advert in the local paper. A lot of your customers are going to be old people who insist on not using the internet, they are more likely to use you because they aren't able bodied like you, and you don't want to lose their custom.

Insurance aside if you are just moving things for other people you should be OK but if you start taking stuff to scrap yards you are likely to need a scrap metal dealers licence from the Council and possibly a waste carrier licence from the Environment agency

Re; Insurance if you don't have business Insurance and you have an accident you will loose everything you own. If you damage someones car, or are involved in any type of accident your Insurance is INVALID.

That was an absolutely STUPID piece of advice from the other answer.

Hi

I am thinking of opening a recovery business a small one just to begin with using a dolly just for brake downs and taking cars from A to B.

Has anyone been in this game before and can anyone tell me any information I will need to know. What insurance I would need and if I would need any special licence to do so I want to do everything by the law you can pick up a dolly for around £3000.

I just want to start of small at the moment and move bigger also does anyone have any information to get a bit of funding and where I would go for that.

Any information would be a help.

Thank you.
