Just a warning - you don't make money with garage sales. You liquidate things you already own, but never for what it was initially worth. It's a good way to get rid of junk and make some pocket money.
As for being successful, put up signs in the neighborhood, stressing some goods that might be good deals. That might depend where you are and the nature of the community - e.g., I've done well selling things in a college community with students popping up for the new year and needing random things for their apartments or houses, but that only worked in that college community, your area might be quite different.
