How do I go about patenting an idea?

You convert your "idea" into a new and non-obvioius invention then file a patent application. No "working model" is required, unless you're claiming "perpetual motion" or the like. If you have more questions, feel free to come on back.

The fact that you can't find other patents or products like it may be a good sign, but your invention will be compared to everything ever disclosed in any publication anywhere in the world or used in public, to determine if it is "new" and not an obvious improvement or combination of anything else.

By contacting the patent office.

You can't. You need a working model.

I have a legit idea that I want to get patent. I looked up other patents and even googled this product I want to make and it hasn't been patented or produced.

I'm just a college student in my 3rd year as a business major, but I don't have much experience in the field at all yet.
