Get a discount brokerage account. To avoid annual fees you need a lot more than $500 to start.

You need to decide if you are a gambler or an investor.

If you want to be an investor then only buy stocks with significant dividends.

All practitioners must inform themselves of new and updated guidance notes within a reasonable time of their promulgation in order to remain professionally competent. I recommend you visit this: http://www.selfbridging.com . They have a really interesting and usefull book that keeps you updated.

Yes, you can start as an amateur. And $500 is enough. But if you want to be succesful you need to get information and useful recommendations. They can help you: https://twitter.com/Valk_Co https://twitter.com/thestreet https://twitter.com/bankinter In fact one of Valks recommendation returned 25% in 2 months.

Hello everyone, I have always been interested in starting stocks. I like to see trends, and keep aware in the news, and simply have a "hobby". I have started on a website called "www.howthemarketworks.com", and so far it has been a great learning tool. I am planning to start with $500 through USAA, and am not sure if it is wise to start as such an "Amateur" level. Does anyone have any tips or guidance? Thank you all for your input and have a great day!
