Telling you to "apply on line" is just a polite way of saying they looked at you and could tell you were wrong for the job, and sending you off to potter around in cyberspace rather than wasting any more of their time...

People who get hired in retail do so by going IN to the store, dressing well, being polite & erudite, and handing a completed application to the Manager, Owner, or Shift Manager...
