But yes, these days companies verify AND double-check everything like crazy - education, references & recommendations, everything. A small company is often going to check MORE thoroughly. They are operating with so few people, each person must be crackerjack at his/her job. There's nobody to show you how to do anything, nobody to help you, nobody to pick up the slack.
You need exceptionally good skills, ability to work on your own, need minimal direction or supervision. You step in there & take charge of your turf from your first hour on the job. You need to know everything cold. And be extremely efficient as well as knowledgeable or you are going to work very long hours getting the job done!
