Currently, you dont own a car and will be joining the military as an officer soon. Should you buy a $5000 car (leaving you with $20,000 left), work for 6 years while continuing to save up as much money as possible, sell your car on year 6 and buy a two-year old $13,000 car that you will be using for the next 6-8 years
OR
Should you use your 25K to buy the same two-year old $13,000 car and head off into the military with it?
Do NOT buy a car before joining the military. You do not know where you will end up. When you get to a sweet duty assignment (stateside, with places to travel to) buy a new car, taking advantage of any military discounts and also the low interest rates at the base credit union (or 1% or 0% at the dealership). You will have no car repairs for years, and the car will last over $10 years, easy.
Seeing as how there's no guarantee, in the military of where you'll be stationed, I'd take option No. 1. Going in the military with a brand new car and possibly having to sell it or let it sit if you go overseas in a year or two doesn't make sense.
There is no point buying an expensive car if you are joining the military. It will depreciate and you will be deployed and have no opportunity to drive it.
