How often does USPS lose packages?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I'm starting to get mildly worried that USPS may have lost a package that I sent to my friend in Canada for his birthday. I sent it out this past Friday, assuming it would take about 3 - 5 days. And it's been about 4 days. He still hasn't gotten it.

So now, I'm thinking 2 things: they've either lost the package, or it has gotten stuck in customs, for whatever stupid reason. (The package only contained a tin of cookies, two scarves, and a hat. Like honestly, so it'd be really stupid if this were the case).

It takes more than 4 days for a package to get to Canada from the U.S. lol. It has to go through customs, change couriers and then travel through their country. Should take about 2 wks. To answer your first question, USPS never "loses" packages. There is no package fairy that takes off with them. What happens is that the address gets torn off, the address gets smeared, the package gets damaged (often due to improper packaging, sometimes packages get infested because they have food in them, get mauled by animals, or damaged by liquid and other contents from other packages. It doesn't occur to people that USPS packages are flown by commercial aircraft. So whenever there is a commercial aircraft crash, the packages are lost as well. But that is never brought up. So, just so you know, they don't lose packages, there are reasons when packages never reach their final destination. And, yeah, give your Canadian package at least 2 weeks before you start worrying.

Two weeks is typical to Canada. It goes through Toronto for Customs Inspection and then delivered by Canada Post. parcels to other countries have to make a lot of extra stops on the way. Your package may have gone to ISC Miami (which handles foreign mail for southern states) for transport to Toronto. Draw that on a map and the distance is about four times a direct line to Surrey. Of course, Surrey is on the US border.

Are you guessing that your location is close tp the delivery point? Like Los Amgeles to St. John's? Or Miami tp Vancouver? Absent your information, we couldn't possibly guess.

it's going to take more than a few days when going to another country - it has to go thru customs
