how do giftcards work?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I went to walmart and i bought a 25$ giftcard for starbucks, when i went to checkout the cashier scanned it and put it in a bag i then paid and left. Does this mean that when my friend uses it it will automatically work or was the cashier suppose to activate it with a code or something? Or did the scan activate it?

Thank you!

If the cashier processed the gift card properly then it should work. Your friend doesn't have to activate it, all they do is hand it over to the cashier or swipe the card and money gets deducted from the card when your friend uses it.

The scan should have activated the card. Usually cards take 24 hours to activate so wait at least 24 hours and then should work!

The cashier IS supposed to activate it at point of sale.

Basically once you pay for it it is supposed to be virtually swipeable, other than maybe scratching off something to reveal a pin number.

The scan should have activated it. f might take 24 hours before it works
