I accepted because I desperately needed the money.
Payment went through from buyer
Now I'm terrified they won't send the item....
I have evidence of them telling me everything is legit and 100% legal
What steps can I take in order to protect myself
It really sounds like they aren't much of a friend if you are worried they are going to rip someone off, including you.
If, as some of your replies suggest, the sale has already taken place and you have already given them the money then I would suggest visiting them and insuring the item has been sent. I would also visit my local police department and inform an inspector of what has taken place. While this will not completely relieve you of any responsibility it will show that you are the most honest one in the bunch. Maybe your "friend" will send the item and all will be well. If not you will have at least shown actual concern.
By law it's still your responsibility to give the money back to the buyer if nothing is sent and eBay will turn the bill over to a collector. They will likely add on their own charges and you will owe even more.
You never list anything on EBay unless younhave the item in your possession and YOU ship to the buyer
Tell this friend he won't get any money until he gives you the item, you ship it and get delivery confirmation and make sure the buyer doesn't file a chargeback. If he won't agree, cancel the sale and refund the buyer and tell your "friend" the buyer never paid
DO NOT give any money to your friend from the sale until 35 days AFTER the close of sale. Because even if he sends the item, if the buyer files a chargeback, you will lose the money
Think about it - why would anyone pay you £300 to list an item they could list themselves if it wasn't some sort of scam? I can see giving you £5-10 to list something but not £300
Hello
First thing is do not do anything with the money.
Do not give any money to the friends friend unless
1/ You go with them and watch them wrap and post the item
2/ Hold on to money until buyer confirms arrival of item and is happy
If there is a problem Ebay can (If paid for PayPal) refund buyer from your PayPal account without your Say so

It is actually a risky thing to do, because essentially you are selling an item you do not have physical possession of. They sent you the payment.

You are liable to refund the money until the item is received.
THEN, they have 30 days to open a dispute resolution after receiving the item, and you are STILL liable to return the money.
THEN, until the case is closed by eBay, you still may be liable to return the money, so you need to watch for a notification by eBay that the case is in resolution and continue to track it until it is closed.
Therefore, you hold all money sent to you until 33 after receipt of the item by the buyer, for as long as that takes. If you are supposed to be earning £300, then after 33 days, if there is no notification of a dispute, you can give the actual seller the money minus your commission.
You should have asked about this before the listing, because your friend may not realize you have to hold the money for 33 days after the item buyer reports receipt of the item.
if this is a friend which I think by the sound of it is then im sure all wi be ok if you have the pament still in your account DO NOT SPEND IT because if they don't send the item you will be held liable to pay the buyer back....... so when you know the item has been sent to the buyer and all is ok then you can keepthe money jut cover yourself..
Too late. You should have taken possession of the item when you put it up for sale. That is how you protect yourself.
