I don't know where you got the idea that he has that much cash. He doesn't. He net worth is more than that, and it's invested either through Cascade or his remaining MSFT shares.

He actually gives most of it away. He's a billionaire who has actually seen and spent time in the houses he owns, and for his wealth, is sort of a cheapskate.
buried in his backyard. You miss read that he doesn't have $47B in cash, that is his net worth, which includes his stock investments, his bond investments, his 401K, his property investments, etc. etc. etc.
banks & investments. most of his cash goes to his charity though. he has pledged to give 99% of his money to charity when he dies.
most money only resides in computer accounts. Not in stacks of paper.
