This is department store specific, rather than talking about small shops:

Having a job with money coming in (beats unemployment)

Sense of purpose and something to get up for

Active work, not sedentary

Varied and unpredictable working days

Staff discounts

Vibrant and colourful workplaces

All sorts of new skills and things to learn

Opportunities for advancement

You meet all sorts of people

There is usually always something to do

Retailers are reputable companies who look good on CV's

Town centre locations are very useful

Varied work schedules and patterns

Plenty of people and new friends to make

Turnover rate is reasonably fast, so there are always new faces

Lots of social benefits

Job satisfaction from when a customer walks away happy

Job satisfaction from gettting sales floor tasks completed

Social confidence gained from interfacing with people

Department store slapstick and moments of stupidity

Retail workers are very good and helpful to each other

There are not a lot of benefits besides being able to add it to your work experience on a resume. Retail can also teach you about time management, multi tasking and how to reach sales goals. There can be some stress when dealing with upset customers, but if you know how to deal with it then retail can be enjoyable. It can be long hours (mostly spent on your feet) usually working on evenings and weekends. Pay is on the low side as most retail jobs usually start at minimum wage. If it's part time then in some areas retail jobs don't come with insurance benefits. If you're a student it's fine to work in retail for a few years or until you're done school. Set some goals for your self because you don't want to be working 2-3 part time jobs in your 30's when you have bills to pay.

Been working in retail since the 90's.

It's fun if you have great coworkers who are enthusiastic about doing the work. There are very nice people. I enjoy working retail. You Get Talk To people, Put Merchandise On The shelves, Clean And Greet customers.

Ron clearly never worked retail... Its high stress depending where you work & odd hours, Like closing till 11 and being back at 8 am.

I loved working as a salesperson in a retail store, you met so many cool people

You will get nothing instead of little money to survive

low stress ... felxiable hours ... no education required
