Union fees for minimum wage?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I'm 15 and recently got a job in loblaws as a cashier. I make minimum wage (10.20) and on my last pay cheque I worked 5 hours and made $51.00 except $25 was taken off for union feees(a one time thing) and another $7.50 is taken off for union fees. What benefits does the union give me? I'm only making minimum wage I can get that anywhere why would I want to give $7.50 a week to union?

Thanks I'm really conflicted.

why would I want to give $7.50 a week to union? Exactly. But if your state allows "closed shops" (meaning you are REQUIRED to join the union if you work there) then there's nothing you can do but pay or quit.

It's possible that it's not a "closed shop" and union membership is optional. My best advice is to ask your HR person rather than your union rep. Union reps don't always give a direct and correct answer.

Beyond pay, protection of your rights as an employee. If you try to fight your employer to follow contract yourself, you lose pretty quick. The union is there to negotiate a fair contract, protect you in that contract, and covers things if there's a strikes some. We need more unions, not less really.

Unions also negotiate your benefits. Things like paid vacation, tuition assistance, or healthcare. Do you get benefits at your company beyond a paycheck? Do you get a raise after you probationary period?

learn local labor laws where u live they vary greatly.

u may have NO choice.
