Snow Shoveling?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
So im 15 years old and was looking to make some money, so I decided to go shovels peoples walkways for $5.I got about 7 houses and one of them gave me there number so when ever it snows, they told me just to give them a call and then come over and they want me to do that all winter. So I was wondering how much snow there should be in order to ask because I don't want them to think that im trying to rip them off. Also how to do I get a repeating customer with out having them asking me? Also theres about 3-4in right now should I call?

glad you found a way to make some money as a young person - congrats !!! for a repeat customer, tell them that you will shovel the walkway every few days or so ( it would depend on how much snow there is - some weeks you would shovel twice a week, and others more often with heavier snowfall )........you might want to get a receipt book at an office supply store ( or even make your own on the PC ) so that the people will know that you cleared their walk on Jan 11, 14, and 28 for example...............give them a receipt each time.............also I think that $ 5 is way too low to charge unless the walkways are very short; $ 7.50 would be better for an average and $ 10 for a long walk, but that's up to you................keep up the good work and save that dough !!

Yes, call. Especially if there is a chance of more snow falling or of what's there freezing.

Clearing those few inches can keep the postal carrier and others safe which would be good for the homeowner.

If you want repeat customers, it's better to be proactive. Just offer to come whenever it snows. If you want to make it a proper business, write up a simple contract (lots of examples online). Could be the start of your own yard service business!

My snowplow guy plows after a 3" snow. Under 3" I handle it. Maybe you should ask your customers if they would like you to only shovel after a specified snowfall then you don't have to make the calls after every storm. Don't know you but I love your attitude. Good luck!

Absolutely. I think 2 inches would warrant a call. I think you are very industrious and mature for your age.
