Is Amazon penalizing super saver free shipping?

I'm not subscribed to amazon prime because I rarely purchase anything. I know free shipping (price over 35 dollars) can take upwards to 5-8 business day to have it marked shipped and have delivery confirmation. But I think amazon wants all their members to get prime membership due to an experiment I've been doing. These past weeks, I was ordering an item on Amazon. The warehouse is only a state away, and it took them 5 business day to tell me that my package is ready for shipment. The item was shipped through FED EX, and it got to my destination the very next day. I remember a few years ago even using amazon super saver free shipping, it would take them at least 2 days to ship out an item, now it takes forever.. Do you think amazon is delaying shipment purposely to have their members to purchase prime? If so, how do you feel about this? Oh and just so you're wondering, I don't care how long it takes amazon to ship my item. But there are reviews I've been reading that it can take Amazon 1 month to have the item deliver to your door when using super saver free shipping..

While having placed no recent orders on Amazon, always use the super saver free shipping option. The shipping delay always seemed to be a case of Amazon gathering a quantity of eligible super saver packages together and having the shipper do a single day pickup of the accumulated total. Always figured this gave Amazon a better price per package since some shippers will charge a fee if the packages being picked up for the day and location fell below a minimum amount.

This did delay the receipt of the ordered items but saved me from paying a shipping charge. Because my packages usually contained books, always expected the shipping to take a long time.

I think they are prioritizing Prime shipments, and that is why the free shipping option takes longer. They have committed to having Prime members have everything in 2 days, so those not paying for Prime have to wait so they can fulfill that commitment.
