How can I make a profit on ebay?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I recently sold my first item on ebay. It was a dress for $7.50 which I thought was a reasonable price: not too cheap and not too expensive. I didn't offer free shipping and I assumed I would get most of the profit for selling it and wouldn't be charged anything else. However when I sold it and I looked at the transaction into my paypal account I only gained $3.50 and then I had to pay $6 for postage and printing the shipping label. I don't understand if I'm just not doing it correctly or if ebay is a complete rip off. Also I don't understand why if ebay charges the buyer for shipping and handling why I have to pay anything for shipping. I'm just really confused and kind of angry. If someone could explain the process to me that'd be awesome.

Arent you aware that Ebay charges fees when you use their site to sell things? You might use a padded envelope instead of a box to save money. And make sure you weigh the item so you charge accurate shipping.

Ebay doesnt charge buyer anything. Ebay charges YOU fees and YOU have to charge the buyer for shipping. How did you list your item without a shipping charge? Ebay fees are about 9% on the item+shipping cost and 3% when they use Paypal to pay you.

Maybe now that Paypal has split off from Ebay the fees may change.

just to make even more angry, Paypal and Ebay are owned by the same company. So basically you're paying them twice. You pay Paypal Fees and Ebay fees to the same company...

Most of the people who sell professionally on Ebay are on welfare or making minimum wage because they make around $2 profits on each thing they sell. That's why they look so dirty and like bums.

If you're going to be angry, be angry with yourself for failing to read the many pages of help ebay offers new sellers. Why not try that now before you screw up again?

Is there any chance you failed to check a box indicating he shipment payment process?

The one of 3 choices you might have used is:

"Calculated: Cost varies by buyer location"

Pre-calculating the cost and displaying it along with your sales price may give you the best grounds for contesting being charged for the shipping.
