Dyslexia and Recruitment Help me please!?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
Im a recent law LLB UK graduate, I am dyslexic in Maths. I see numbers backwards and fail to do basic maths.?

I however, have applied to a law firm for an assistant role. For a fraud department, there was no requirements bar strong educational background, vibrant personality and ideally previous law work based experience, which I have. I however, had a telephone interview with them today, they liked me and want me to go back next week for an interview. However, the recruiter I dealt with said I will have to take an aptitude test- Maths and English, basic.. I will pass the English but I know I will fail the maths as every number i see is hard for me to read, I cant even add up. I suffer this due to being ill as a child and missing years off school. Do I still go to the interview, I know I will fail the maths side, what shall I do! My hear was set on this, its always my maths that lets me down. What do I say if the interviewer asks if maths affects my daily tasks, it didnt in other law firms as I had help and encouragement along the way.. Please advise me what to do, I dont know whether to still attend.

You don't get dyslexia from not going to school or from being ill. It's a neurological condition that you are born with. If you have problems in math because you don't study well, then start studying.

As for this position, if you aren't good with numbers why would you consider a fraud position?

Call them and tell them about your dyslexia and that you have dyscalculia too. They will make reasonable adjustments for the tests but it sounds like maths is a basic need for the job especially in the Fraud department. You should discuss this with them. There is no point wasting your time going for a job that needs maths to have any chance of undertaking the role.

Good luck.

Tell them about your problem - they may decide you are unsuitable on that basis (especially for a lawyer dealing with fraud, which inevitably involves numbers) or they may decide they can accommodate you. Better to be up-front rather than simply get rejected when you fail their test.

So my previous answer about Functional Skills was no use to you then. Did you read it?
