Its not that company's are afraid of AT&T, its just a tough market that is controlled by only a few. It's an expensive industry to get into if you are considering purchasing your own towers and satellites, etc...

This is why many smaller companies like Virgin Mobile and Metro PCS rent space from the towers that are owned by companies like AT&T.

AT&T has some tough competition though. Although it may not seem like it, but Verizon controls a substantial amount of the cell phone industry market almost as much as AT&T themselves.

Also, if Sprint and T-Mobile were t successfully merge, all 3 companies (AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon) would carry nearly equal market share.
